The cyclone response has to take precedence over the speed limit works, with council staff being heavily involved in planning for the two or three year programme of repairs after the immediate clear up. To keep the speed limit changes moving Ed Varley has asked for support from Pinnacles as the councils consultant, and should have that additional resource starting next week. This will mean that the speed limit changes should be processed separately from the normal council business. Based on this Council are now looking at reporting to Council in September 2023.
On the downside however, because of the need for funding to be prioritised towards storm response both Waka Kotahi (NZTA) and council are looking to move funds that would have been used for traffic calming into the storm repairs. This means that there is the minimum level of funding needed for signing of speed limits in the next financial year (2023-24), not for physical measures. The physical traffic calming projects are being moved into an ongoing programme of works under the councils 2024-34 Long Term Plan that will be open for public consultation next year
