A member of the Cooks Beach Community approached the rates payers association in regards to the possibility of the installation of a CCTV camera to provide a deterrent to potential burglars and also as a resource for apprehending criminal offenders. A draft privacy policy is being worked on and is available at the Mercury Bay Rate payers https://mercurybaysouthratepayers.weebly.com/ as well as a short survey. Policy includes that footage would be accessed by the NZ police in case of an incident in our area. Clear signage would be in place to provide awareness of the location of the camera in our area. Footage would only be stored for a set period of time. All data is held by the Police. The aim would be to hand the CCTV asset over to the council to maintain and look after including the ongoing expenses.
The Rate Payers association will not be paying for the camera, a separate group will fundraise to secure finances for the project. The council has offered to install a pole and provide power.
Suggested positions for the camera is by the Vodafone tower on Purangi Road, entry to Longreach and Cooks Hall. and
